After listening to people complain about child support i decided to do a little research of my own, as I too recieve child support for my first child. A friend of mine has been paying child support for 16 years and his oldest son has now reached 18 and is finished school. He soon found out that his child support had no end date, which means he was to pay for his children until the day he died. Why is that i thought??
In researching into my own court papers, my support too had no end date. That started my research. In my research findings, i found out that 70% of all court orders to pay child support had no end date. Was that due to what the mother had set out to do?? Why would any father or mother have to pay support for a child that is on thier own. They could have jobs and families but the parent is still paying for thier care. This was astounding to me. I would not want my sons father to pay for him when he isn't under my roof, he needs to stand on 2 feet and learn the real world.
My sons father and I sat down after i realized that there was no end date and created one ourselves, so that in 11 years we are not fighting over when the child support should indeed end.
My advise for most people in this situation, is to get an end date established before the child reaches college age, because the parent paying support has the right to go back to court and get his money back if a child does not go to college and they are graduated from high school. Save yourself the grief and battles. Get everything worked out. It is simple to do and worth every effort...
